PLAYground is Purple Crayon Players' annual spring festival of staged readings. Student directors tackle new works by professional theatre for youth playwrights, creating a dynamic staged reading and post-show feedback session.
Now entering its third year, PLAYground develops fresh work for young audiences, whether with first readings or final workshops before publication, and exposes the Northwestern campus and community to recent developments in TYA. Purple Crayon Players seeks diversity of playwright voice, target audience, and content, and strives to pair works with student directors invested in the playwright’s development goals.
This year, we are hoping to invite the chosen playwrights to campus for a 1-2 day script development workshop prior the festival!
"PLAYground will quickly establish itself as an important venue for testing out new TYA work. What makes it unique is also its strength: student actors, directors, designers and producers working with professional playwrights. You put so much enthusiasm and care into developing these plays. I greatly appreciate that high level of respect towards me and my work. The field of TYA will be better for the PLAYground's existence."
"Everybody's so dedicated and invested... [Purple Crayon Players] is doing such a high level of work."
"[Purple Crayon Players] handled every detail of this -- the programs, the facility, the logistics of the whole thing, as well as three very different staged readings so professionally. I am blown away."
